When you're not who you were anymore, but you're not sure who you are yet
There’s this weird in-between place that no one really talks about.
You’re not who you used to be. You’ve outgrown the version of yourself that held everything together. The identity, the story, the way you moved through the world when things felt fragile. You’re not that person anymore. You know that.
But you’re also not totally sure who you are now, either.
You’re kind of floating in the middle. Not lost, exactly, but definitely not anchored.
You try to explain it to someone, but you end up trailing off halfway through the sentence. The words don’t quite land. You’re in transition, but there’s no language for it yet.
You’re not in crisis. You’re just... between. And it’s uncomfortable in a really specific way.
Even when that old identity felt restrictive or exhausting, at least it was familiar. At least it had structure. At least it made sense to other people.
Now? You’re in soft data mode. Rebooting. Updating. Wondering what the next version of you will feel like to live inside.
And when people try to encourage you — when they say things like “trust the process” or “just lean into it” — it can be frustrating. Because they don’t get it. They don’t understand that you’ve already let go of something huge, and you haven’t found your footing yet.
This isn’t laziness. This isn’t indecision. This isn’t being stuck.
It’s what happens when your inner system starts rejecting the survival coding, but the new pathways haven’t fully come online yet.
It’s the space between shedding and arriving.
And it needs to be held. Not fixed. Not rushed. Just held.
If you're here right now, I get it.
You don’t need a breakthrough or a brand new plan.
You probably just need more space. Less noise. Fewer expectations. And some time to let the next version of you build itself in peace.
That next version is coming. You don’t need to force it.
💭 Journal Prompt
“What parts of me are falling away, and what do I want to make space for - even if I can’t name it yet?”
Let it be messy. You’re not writing answers. You’re listening.
